Model Nikki Gal on self-care and the importance of mental health


Nikki Gal represents a new generation of models, who are increasingly called ‘model-preneurs’. These girls actively combine a career in modeling with entrepreneurial activities, which allows them to develop in many ways, feel independent and choose the projects to their liking. This approach requires a lot of dedication and effort. We learned from Nikki how she manages to keep her body and soul in order at such a fast pace of life.

On maintaining beauty throughout the day

My biggest secret is staying hydrated. The human body is 60% water, and it is water that flushes out toxins. I drink at least 4 glasses of water every day, which helps keep my skin clean and healthy. During the change of seasons, the skin becomes inflamed, especially around the eyes. I like to let it breathe and avoid using makeup whenever possible. I have long understood that less is more, especially when it comes to the appearance and natural glow of my skin.

On skin care

Over the years, I've narrowed down my skincare regimen to only gentle and vegan products that suit my skin type. I strongly recommend booking a consultation with a professional dermatologist who can work out the daily care routine for you – this is the first step to achieving the best result. My daily skincare routine consists of 5 steps: cleanser, moisturizer, serum, essence and, finally, lip balm. Also, for three months I will be using a 2% BHA liquid exfoliant and toner to further rejuvenate my skin. A good vitamin C serum is also a great way to protect the skin from the sun and it plays a key role in my daily skincare routine. At night, I like to use a hydrating mask with hyaluronic acid to keep the skin hydrated.

About body care

I usually aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night as I want to give my body time to recover and rest as much as possible. After using the body moisturizer, I realized that exfoliation is an important step in my daily routine as it helps regeneration by removing dead cells and improving blood circulation. I finish my routine with a moisturizing body cream with SPF. Diet is another key to healthy skin and a fit body, as I love foods rich in vitamin C, anthocyanins and skin-strengthening antioxidants.

On mental health

To keep my mental health in these difficult times, I rely on my close circle – there are many very strong and inspiring women around me. Journalism also kindles my motivation, as well as studying psychology. When you understand how the brain works, how the body reacts, external challenges are immediately easier to go through. I can say from my own experience that reading something that interests you every day helps you become more productive.

On recovery after flights

Many models have to deal with sleep deprivation due to changing time zones and extremely busy schedules. I always rely on maintaining a balanced water intake and a good night's sleep, and at the same time, I believe that you can practice quick recovery by devoting 10-30 minutes a day to yourself. As a creative person, I like to draw, write, and practice yoga. Such short but pleasant breaks help increase productivity and energy levels, and prevent burnout and further exhaustion.

Advice for herself as a teenager

Do not fall asleep with makeup on your face. Everyone wants to go to bed as soon as possible after a loud party, but it's extremely important to remove your makeup at the end of the day to prevent breakouts and skin irritation. Since my late teens, I’ve always kept makeup-removing wipes on my nightstand.
