Interior design consultant Desiree Busnelli has been in the industry for more than ten years, during which time it has become incredibly popular. We spoke with her about her creative journey, the new meaning of home in our lives, and her passion for fashion.
On the creative journey
I find it hard to call the profession of interior design my job, because it is an essential part of my life. I started developing several projects more than a decade ago and I cannot stop. It is an exciting process with ample room for growth and development. Trends are constantly changing, as are the moods and needs of clients.
On interior design trends
The use of recycled materials is becoming an important trend in practical and ecological interior design. I'm excited to see new artists bring these things to life in our living spaces. I also enjoy working with the modern French design style and contemporary luxury — these trends are relevant now and will be for many years to come. In the fashion industry, which I also love, trends change fast, while in interior design we have to think several years, sometimes even decades, ahead.
On the feeling of home
During the lockdown, people began to spend a lot of time at home, and many of them started to look at it differently — home became not just a place to sleep. This affected me as well. First, I set up a gym in one of the rooms with plenty of sunlight, and our whole family started working out together. The kids practiced online yoga. The adults mastered the treadmill — everyone was moving and trying to use this time to benefit their health. The kitchen was another source of strength for our family: during family dinners, we could talk, share a good meal, and joke, catering to our emotional well-being.
On inspiration
"The eye has to travel" — this famous Diana Vreeland’s line is as important as ever both for the fashion industry and my own work. Traveling and learning about other cultures is helpful and can sometimes offer simple but effective solutions. For example, after a trip to Japan, I discovered the aesthetics of modern hidden spaces. You always want to knock down a wall and expand the space or, on the contrary, install an extra door, and this approach helps transform a space from a daytime studio into a romantic bedroom.
On fashion inspiration
Fashion is another creative industry that inspires me endlessly. My time in Europe has made me even more fascinated by the quality of timeless things that stay with us for a lifetime. Fashion is a different kind of art that is more applied and can please you more often. My passion for fashion has turned into a fantastic journey with incredible designers around me. I could talk about them for hours.
On the photo shoot
This photo shoot was where my two main passions — interiors and fashion — came together. This look was created by the artisans of the Fendi fashion house who recreated an archival dress for me in their workshop. The shoot took place in a location that is important to me and that my team is currently working on restoring.
On the plans for the future
There are always plenty of ideas, so you'll have to be patient. Just a little spoiler — look out for me at the next Fashion Week in Paris. We are getting ready for it.
